Community Corner

At Community Corner kids will learn what it means to serve Jesus in their own backyards, among their friends and neighbors, and even farther out into their own communities. Large-group service projects will be encouraged and kids will be introduced to other people, young and old alike, who serve Jesus through their jobs or through special projects and hobbies.

Special Servants
Suggestions are included in the Community Corner Leader’s Guide for inviting community leaders to visit with the kids at God’s Big Backyard. You can contact leaders of scout troops, volunteer workers, sanitation workers, hobbyists, mail carriers, police officers, and firefighters to visit at the Community Corner site. These individuals can share about the ways they serve others and what has been accomplished in other people’s lives and in their own lives too.

Special Service
Each day kids will work together on a service project. The Community Corner Leader’s Guide gives several service project suggestions for each day. Some projects will take only one session to complete, while others will be done over several days. Look over these projects early and choose which ones you think your kids would like to do. Gauge the time needed for each project by the ability and age of the students, the size of your group, and the supplies that are available to you.

Serving Hands
At the end of each day at Community Corner, kids will be given an opportunity to report on a service project they have participated in (or are planning to do). As kids report, they can sign a Serving Hand. Kids will be asked to put the hands on the tree (or other stage item) during the closing large-group time at Backyard Bash. Everyone celebrates as more and more hands serve in God’s Big Backyard.

Community Corner DVD
The Community Corner DVD includes five short stories of volunteers who found ways to spread the love of Jesus by serving other people. You can use these stories instead of or in addition to inviting community servant volunteers.
